Sushant Sareen, a foreign affairs expert, has expressed his views on the recent attack on a Hindu temple in Brampton, Canada, which coincided with an Indian High Commission consular camp. He noted that Prime Minister Narendra Modis condemnation of the attack reflects a serious concern for the safety of Indian diplomats in Canada. Sareen pointed out that such acts indicate a deteriorating relationship between India and Canada, emphasizing that Canadian authorities bear responsibility for the environment that allows these incidents to happen. In his statements, Sareen remarked, PM Modi is also pointing fingers at Canadian authorities, highlighting the expectation that Canada should uphold diplomatic norms and ensure the safety of Indian diplomats. He criticized the Canadian governments handling of the situation, suggesting that Indias traditional diplomatic approaches may no longer be effective and calling for a reassessment of strategies in light of the escalating tensions between the two nations. Modis social media statement condemned the deliberate attack and described the attempts to intimidate Indian diplomats as cowardly. He urged the Canadian government to ensure justice and uphold the rule of law. Sareens analysis underscores a growing frustration within India regarding Canadas actions and their implications for bilateral relations. The ongoing tensions and security concerns continue to challenge diplomatic ties, prompting calls for a more effective approach to addressing these critical issues. The first suspected Guillain-Barre Syndrome death in Maharashtra is reported, with 101 cases in Pune.
Maharashtra reported its first suspected death from Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) on Sunday after a patient passed away at a private hospital in Solapur. In addition, the number of GBS cases in Pune has risen to 101, causing alarm among health authorities. The deceased, a 40-year-old man, had been suffering from diarrhea along with cold and cough symptoms. He was admitted to the ICU on January 18, and his condition initially improved, allowing him to be moved to a regular room. An autopsy conducted by doctors at Solapur Government Medical College suggested that GBS may have been the cause of death, although further tests on brain, blood, and intestinal tissue samples are being conducted to confirm this. The final cause of death is expected within 15 days. In Pune, the surge in GBS cases has been alarming, with 28 new cases reported in the last 24 hours. This has raised the total number of cases to 101, a sharp increase from the usual two cases per month. Currently, 16 patients are on ventilator support, and GBS symptoms have been noted in 19 children under 9 years old, as well as 23 people in the 50-80 age range. Laboratory tests have confirmed the presence of Campylobacter jejuni bacteria, which is a known trigger for GBS. In response, health officials have stepped up water testing, particularly in areas with the highest case numbers. A recent test showed high levels of E. coli bacteria in a well near Khadakwasla Dam, which is Pune's main water source. However, it's unclear whether this well is currently in use. As of Sunday, health authorities have surveyed over 25,000 households in an effort to identify more GBS cases and trace the source of the outbreak. Guillain-Barre Syndrome is a rare condition where the immune system attacks the nerves after a bacterial or viral infection. Symptoms include weakness, paralysis, and other complications. While 80% of patients regain their ability to walk independently within six months, some may take up to a year or longer to fully recover. Treatment for GBS can be expensive, with each immunoglobulin (IVIG) injection costing around Rs 20,000. To help families, Maharashtra Finance Minister Ajit Pawar has announced that GBS treatment will now be provided free of charge in government hospitals. Kejriwal Accusations Against BJP Verma Under Police Investigation
The New Delhi district election officer (DEO) has referred the Aam Aadmi Party's (AAP) complaints against Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Parvesh Verma to the police for further investigation, according to a report by PTI. AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal accused Verma of violating the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) by distributing ₹1,100 in cash and organizing job camps under the "Har Ghar Naukari" campaign. Kejriwal claimed that these actions constitute corrupt practices as per Election Commission rules and demanded that Verma be barred from contesting elections. He also called for a raid on Verma's residence to uncover any hidden cash. The DEO submitted an action-taken report to the chief electoral officer (CEO) of Delhi, stating that police were instructed to investigate Kejriwal’s allegations and take appropriate action under the Representation of Peoples Act. Additionally, the DEO issued instructions to prevent the organization of job camps scheduled for January 15. However, reports from poll officials indicated that flying squads, responsible for monitoring MCC violations, did not find evidence of job camps or related pamphlets, as alleged by AAP. Kejriwal further accused the local election officer of the New Delhi constituency of favoring the BJP and facilitating its alleged wrongdoings. He demanded the suspension of the local DEO and ERO and claimed that arbitrary deletions of voters from electoral rolls were taking place. These allegations were rejected by poll officials. Supreme Court Supports Unified Hearing for Mathura Land Cases
The Supreme Court, on Friday, expressed its reluctance to interfere with a judicial order consolidating several lawsuits related to the Sri Krishna Janmabhoomi-Shahi Eidgah Masjid land dispute in Mathura. The court observed that such consolidation benefits both parties by ensuring a streamlined process and minimizing the risk of contradictory judgments. A bench comprising Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna and Justice PV Sanjay Kumar noted that grouping the cases allows for centralized and efficient adjudication. The bench further emphasized that the broader question concerning the validity of these suits, in light of the Places of Worship (Special Provisions) Act, 1991, is already pending before the apex court. It stated that challenging every procedural decision unnecessarily delays the resolution of the core issue. "Why should we interfere with the order of consolidation in the high court? We are examining the larger issue. How does it make a difference? It’s better if all similar suits are taken together. Everything is not to be contested," the bench remarked. Tasneem Ahamadi, the advocate representing the mosque management committee, argued that the consolidation of cases could materially affect the proceedings and requested an adjournment. However, the bench maintained its stance, stating that multiple proceedings would complicate matters for both parties. “It’s better for you and the other side too. Let it be. If required, we will adjourn it, but in our opinion, this doesn’t need to be contested,” it asserted. The court decided to adjourn the matter for further hearing in April 2025, allowing time for both parties to prepare for the consolidated cases while reaffirming its position on streamlining the legal process. Death Toll Reaches 6 as CM Naidu Convenes Review Meeting
At least six people lost their lives, and several others were injured in a stampede near Tirupati's Vishnu Nivasam on Wednesday during the distribution of Vaikunta Dwara Sarva Darshan tokens. The tragedy unfolded as hundreds of devotees crowded to secure tickets for the 10-day Vaikunta Dwara Darshanam, scheduled to commence on January 10. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu expressed deep sorrow over the incident, offering his condolences to the victims' families. In a statement released by the Chief Minister's Office, he described the deaths as a shocking and unfortunate loss. Visuals from the site captured chaotic scenes of a massive crowd struggling for space, with police officers attempting to control the overcrowding at Vishnu Nivasam. The overwhelming turnout led to severe congestion, complicating efforts to maintain order. The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) officials stated that arrangements had been made to distribute 1.20 lakh tokens starting Thursday morning at 5:30 a.m. across 94 counters. These counters were set up at key locations, including Vishnu Nivasam, Srinivasam, and Bhudevi Complexes, along with additional distribution points at Satyanarayanapuram, Bairagipatteda, and Ramanaidu School. However, despite the planned schedule, pilgrims began gathering at the lodges from Wednesday itself, leading to overcrowding and an eventual stampede. The authorities are now facing questions over crowd management and the adequacy of measures taken to prevent such a tragic event. Disclaimer:This image is taken from Reuters.
