Bangladesh and India engaged in discussions over escalating tensions at the border as the Bangladeshi Foreign Ministry summoned Indian High Commissioner Pranay Verma on Sunday to voice “deep concern” over recent activities by India’s Border Security Force (BSF). This diplomatic engagement followed Bangladesh’s accusations that India was attempting to erect fences at five locations along the Indo-Bangla border in violation of a bilateral agreement.
After meeting with Bangladesh Foreign Secretary Jashim Uddin, High Commissioner Verma stated: “I just met the Foreign Secretary to reaffirm India’s commitment to maintaining a crime-free border by addressing smuggling, criminal activities, and trafficking challenges effectively.” Verma highlighted ongoing communication between the BSF and the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), emphasizing the shared understanding about fencing the border for security purposes. He expressed optimism that both countries would take a collaborative approach to tackle border-related crimes.
Earlier, Bangladesh’s Home Affairs Adviser, Lt Gen (retd.) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, revealed that India had suspended its barbed wire fence construction following strong resistance from the BGB and local residents. The Bangladeshi Foreign Ministry reported that Jashim Uddin conveyed to the Indian envoy that unauthorized fencing activities by the BSF have heightened tensions along the border. He stressed that such unilateral actions undermine the spirit of cooperation and friendly ties between the two neighbors.
The Foreign Secretary also expressed hope that the upcoming Director-General-level talks between the BGB and BSF would comprehensively address these concerns. Additionally, Jashim Uddin raised concerns over the recent killing of a Bangladeshi citizen in Sunamganj by the BSF. He urged Indian authorities to take immediate steps to prevent such incidents, conduct thorough investigations into all border-related killings, and hold those responsible accountable.
