The Assam government is set to upgrade the infrastructure of 252 rural government schools, allocating over Rs 1,800 crore for the project, according to officials. These schools, selected from each of Assam's 126 assembly constituencies, are part of an initiative announced in last year's budget.
Mamata Hojai, Director of Secondary Education, explained that the schools are being renovated under the Rural Infrastructure Development Fund (RIDF), with the selection process guided by the suggestions of local MLAs. Construction is already underway at most schools and is expected to be completed by next year.
Each school will receive an investment of Rs 7 crore to Rs 8 crore, totaling Rs 1,827 crore for the entire project. The initiative is part of a larger plan, with Finance Minister Ajanta Neog's 2024-25 budget proposing the transformation of 322 schools across the state, with a total budget of Rs 2,369.86 crore.
Hojai declined to comment on whether the upgraded schools would continue to be vernacular mediums or transition to a dual-medium system with English. The decision will be made at a later time.
Notable schools included in the revamp plan are Patacharkuchi Vidyapith in Bajali, Earle HS School in Cachar, Graham Bazar Girls' High School in Dibrugarh, Maibong Sr Secondary School in Dima Hasao, Devicharan Barua Girls' High School in Jorhat, Natun Fatasil Town High School in Guwahati, and Nalbari Girls' High School.
