Big B couldn’t contain his excitement as India’s women’s cricket team made history by clinching their first-ever ICC Women’s World Cup title. The legendary actor, known for his passion for sports, joined millions across the nation in celebrating the team’s spectacular victory over South Africa in a nail-biting final on Sunday.
Taking to his X account, Amitabh Bachchan expressed immense pride and joy over the achievement, calling it a moment of great national honor. His post read, “T 5552 - jiit gye !!! India Women Cricket .. WORLD CHAMPIONS !! So much pride you have brought for us all .. CONGRATULATIONS CONGRATULATIONS CONGRATULATIONS !!!!”
As for the match, South Africa chose to bowl first after winning the toss. Openers Smriti Mandhana (45 off 58, eight fours) and Shafali Verma laid a solid foundation with a century partnership. Shafali continued her stellar form, scoring 87 off 78 balls, while Jemimah Rodrigues contributed 24, helping India reach 166/2. Captain Harmanpreet Kaur (20 off 29) and Deepti Sharma built a 52-run stand to push the score past 200. Deepti (58 off 58) and Richa Ghosh (34 off 24) provided a strong finish, guiding India to a commanding 298/7 in 50 overs. Ayabonga Khaka (3/58) was South Africa’s standout bowler.
During the chase, South Africa started well with a fifty-run opening stand before Tazmin Brits (23) was dismissed. Despite captain Laura Wolvaardt’s brilliant century (101 off 98), the Indian bowlers turned the game around. Shafali Verma (2/36) and Shree Charani picked key wickets before Deepti Sharma produced a match-winning spell. Deepti claimed 5/39, becoming the first Indian woman to take a five-wicket haul in a World Cup final, as India bowled out South Africa for 246 to secure their maiden World Cup crown.
