Vijay Diwas: President Droupadi Murmu pays tribute to the bravery and selfless sacrifices of the heroes of the 1971 war

President Droupadi Murmu paid tribute to the heroes of the 1971 India-Pakistan War on the 54th Vijay Diwas, honoring their courage, sacrifice, and dedication to the nation. The 1971 war marked a decisive victory for India and led to the liberation of Bangladesh. Recalling the valor and patriotism of the armed forces, President Murmu acknowledged the supreme sacrifices of soldiers and expressed deep gratitude to the Indian Armed Forces for protecting the nation’s sovereignty and honor. In a post on X, she wrote, “On the occasion of Vijay Diwas, I pay my humble respects to the brave sons of Mother India. Their courage, valor, and unparalleled devotion to the motherland continue to inspire the nation.”
She highlighted Vijay Diwas as a symbol of the Indian Armed Forces’ indomitable spirit and a reminder of a significant chapter in India’s military history. The President also recalled the bravery shown during Operation Sindoor, India’s responsive strike after the Pahalgam terror attack, praising the army’s professionalism, preparedness, and use of modern warfare techniques. She emphasized self-reliance, vigilance, and strategic resolve as hallmarks of the armed forces.
Vijay Diwas is observed annually on December 16 to commemorate India’s historic 1971 victory, which led to the surrender of Pakistani forces and the creation of Bangladesh. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also paid tribute, stating that the courage and sacrifice of the armed forces ensured India’s historic victory and continue to inspire generations.
Across the country, the day was marked with commemorative events, including a Military Tattoo in Kolkata by the Eastern Command. The Indian Army highlighted the joint efforts of the Mukti Bahini and Indian forces, noting that the 13-day campaign led to the surrender of over 93,000 Pakistani soldiers, marking one of the largest military surrenders in history and reshaping South Asia’s map.
