UK Deputy PM says India summit is a crucial opportunity to unlock AI's full potential.

The United Kingdom has said its main priority at the AI Impact Summit beginning Monday in New Delhi, India, is to promote how artificial intelligence can drive economic growth, create employment, enhance public services, and deliver global benefits. The UK delegation, led by Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy and AI Minister Kanishka Narayan, aims to demonstrate AI’s potential to improve daily life worldwide. They emphasized AI’s role in helping doctors diagnose illnesses faster, enabling teachers to tailor education, allowing local governments to deliver services more efficiently, and supporting businesses in creating future job opportunities.
Lammy described the summit as a crucial opportunity for countries to collaborate in unlocking AI’s full potential while ensuring strong and fair safety measures. The UK’s Department for Science, Innovation and Technology noted that Britain and India share a natural partnership in technology, with major Indian firms such as Infosys, Tata Consultancy Services, and Wipro expanding their presence across the UK.
Narayan, the first Indian-origin Member of Parliament from Wales, highlighted AI as the most influential technology of this era. He said it can reduce waiting times, modernize public services, generate jobs, and support communities. He also stressed that AI’s benefits should be shared widely rather than limited to a few, and that the UK is committed to promoting a global vision where people everywhere can benefit from and help shape AI. During his visit, Narayan will also travel to Bengaluru to strengthen UK-India collaboration in advanced technologies. Both countries are investing heavily in research areas such as battery innovation, rural telecommunications, and genomic medicine.
India remains an important market for British companies, with UK businesses generating over 47.5 billion pounds in revenue there. At the summit, the UK is also expected to announce new initiatives under its AI for Development programme, including support for African language AI tools and research hubs. These efforts aim to ensure developing countries can access AI resources and benefit from technological advancements. The New Delhi summit is being recognized as the first major global AI gathering hosted in the Global South, focusing on cooperation built around people, environmental sustainability, and progress.
