Two Soldiers Killed After US Army Apache Helicopter Crashes and Catches Fire in Central Texas Field

Two US Army soldiers lost their lives after an AH-64 Apache attack helicopter from Fort Hood crashed into a field near Salado in Central Texas on Wednesday, triggering a major grass fire, the Army confirmed. Fort Hood said both soldiers aboard the aircraft were killed in the accident. Their names were not immediately released, with officials saying their identities would be withheld for 24 hours to allow time for their families to be notified.

The remains of the service members were taken to Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center at Fort Hood as officials began the necessary procedures. Brigadier General Ethan Diven, acting commander of the 1st Cavalry Division, offered condolences to the families, friends and fellow soldiers affected by the tragedy. The crash took place at around 1:35 pm local time in a field near Salado, according to the Bell County Sheriff's Office, as reported by CNN. The impact sparked a grass fire that spread over approximately 100 acres, leading authorities to evacuate nearby areas while emergency crews battled the flames.

Officials said the helicopter did not hit any buildings or other people. Fort Hood personnel worked with local emergency responders at the crash site as authorities launched an investigation to determine what caused the accident. The AH-64 Apache is a two-seat attack helicopter featuring a tandem cockpit, with the pilot positioned behind the co-pilot and gunner. It has served as one of the US Army's primary attack helicopters since entering service in the 1980s.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott also expressed his condolences, saying the state remains grateful to the military personnel who serve the country and offering prayers for the families of the two soldiers. Fort Hood said further information would be released through its media centre as it becomes available and in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.
