Two More Arrested in Bangladesh Lynching Case; Total Held Climbs to 12

Bangladesh authorities have arrested two more individuals in connection with the mob lynching of a Hindu garment worker, taking the total number of suspects in custody to 12, police officials said. The victim, Dipu Chandra Das, a 25-year-old garment factory worker from the Mymensingh region, was attacked by a mob following unverified allegations that he had made remarks hurting religious sentiments. He was brutally beaten to death, his body was reportedly hung from a tree, and later set on fire before being recovered by authorities and sent for post-mortem examination.
According to investigators, Das was first assaulted near his workplace before the violence escalated. His family later filed a police complaint naming 140 to 150 unidentified persons as accused. Law enforcement agencies, including police and the Rapid Action Battalion, have been examining video footage and eyewitness accounts to identify those involved, leading to the latest arrests. Officials have stated that no credible evidence has so far emerged to support the allegations that triggered the mob attack. Investigators said they have found no verified social media posts or witness testimony confirming the claims made against the victim.
The interim government has condemned the killing and assured that all those responsible will be brought to justice. Authorities have emphasised that mob violence and vigilantism will not be tolerated and that legal action will be taken against anyone found involved in the crime. The incident has intensified concerns over the safety of religious minorities in Bangladesh amid a broader breakdown of law and order in several parts of the country. Human rights groups and community leaders have called for swift justice and stronger measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
