US President Donald Trump has said he is willing to accept the results of the 2026 midterm elections as Democrats make significant gains in congressional races, putting the Republican Party at risk of losing control of Congress. In an interview with The New York Times on Tuesday, Trump said he was prepared to work with Democrats following the election results. "I am absolutely willing to accept those results," Trump said, according to the newspaper. "We'll work with the Democrats, and we'll, you know, look forward to working with them. We'll probably work something out," he added.

The Democratic Party recorded a series of major victories in Tuesday's elections, including in states traditionally considered Republican strongholds. The results have put Democrats in a strong position to take control of the Senate, while projections also indicate that the party is on track to win the House of Representatives. According to Reuters, the election outcome could significantly change the balance of power in Washington during the final two years of Trump's presidency. The Republican Party had controlled both chambers of Congress during the first two years of Trump's second term.

Democratic victories in several closely contested Senate races have delivered a major setback to Republicans. The party's gains have also strengthened its position in the House, where multiple Republican-held seats have been flipped. The election was widely viewed as a referendum on Trump's leadership and his administration's policies. Economic concerns, rising living costs and dissatisfaction with the government's handling of major issues featured prominently in the campaign.

Trump, however, has sought to distance himself from the Republican losses. In a social media post, he said Republicans would have secured a much bigger victory if he had been on the ballot. The potential Democratic takeover of Congress could create significant challenges for the White House. A Democratic-controlled House would give the opposition greater authority to investigate the administration, conduct congressional hearings and scrutinise government policies.

Control of the Senate would also allow Democrats to exercise greater influence over presidential appointments and legislation. Despite the expected shift in congressional power, Trump would retain his presidential authority, including the ability to veto bills passed by lawmakers. The president has previously indicated that he could use his veto powers to block Democratic-backed legislation if disagreements emerge.

With Democrats preparing to strengthen their position in Congress, the election results could usher in a period of political confrontation between the White House and lawmakers on Capitol Hill. The final congressional balance will determine how much room Democrats have to challenge Trump's legislative agenda and influence US policy during the remainder of his term.
