Three Filipino fishermen were injured after being targeted by water cannons from the Chinese coast guard, according to the Philippines.

The Philippine coast guard reported that Chinese coast guard ships used powerful water cannons and blocking maneuvers against 20 Philippine fishing vessels near a disputed shoal in the South China Sea, injuring three fishermen and damaging two boats in what was described as a life-threatening incident.
Officials said that Chinese personnel on smaller rubber boats also deliberately cut the anchor lines of several Philippine vessels on Friday afternoon near Sabina Shoal, putting the crews at risk amid strong currents and high waves. Chinese authorities have not commented on the incident but have consistently vowed to defend their claimed territories. The South China Sea, a crucial global trade route, is largely claimed by China despite a 2016 UN-backed arbitration ruling that rejected Beijing’s expansive claims. China dismissed the ruling and continues to assert control over the area.
Two Philippine coast guard ships were dispatched to assist the fishermen but encountered aggressive blocking maneuvers by the Chinese ships, with one vessel approaching as close as 35 yards (105 feet) at night, according to Philippine coast guard spokesperson Commodore Jay Tarriela. He condemned the actions, saying Chinese forces are endangering ordinary fishermen and civilians. Despite the interference, the Philippine coast guard successfully reached the fishermen, providing medical care and essential supplies. The coast guard urged China to follow internationally recognized standards, prioritizing the safety of lives at sea over aggressive enforcement measures.
The United States, while having no territorial claims in the area, has warned that it is obliged to defend the Philippines, its long-time treaty ally, if Filipino forces face armed attacks. Other countries involved in the ongoing disputes include Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei, and Taiwan, making the South China Sea a persistent regional flashpoint.
