Ten people, including the gunman, were killed in a school shooting in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, Canada.

A devastating shooting at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School in northeastern British Columbia has resulted in 10 deaths, including the suspected gunwoman, according to CBC News. Authorities say the incident is among the most serious tragedies in the region in recent years. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police confirmed that six victims were found inside the school. One individual died while being transported to hospital, and two others were located at a nearby residence believed to be connected to the case. Police reported that the suspect died from a self-inflicted injury earlier in the day.
Two people were airlifted to hospital with critical injuries, while approximately 25 others were treated for less serious injuries at the local health centre. Investigators stated there is no ongoing threat to the public and no indication of additional suspects. Officers are continuing to search properties in the area to determine whether anyone else may be involved or injured.
Additional RCMP personnel, including members of the Major Crime Unit, have been assigned to support the investigation. Authorities are also coordinating with the school district to reunite students with their families. North District Chief Superintendent Ken Floyd described the situation as rapidly unfolding and praised the swift response from school staff, emergency personnel, and the community. He extended condolences to those affected, acknowledging the emotional toll on residents.
During the emergency response, access to the Tumbler Ridge Health Centre was restricted, with non-urgent visits postponed. Regular services are expected to resume at 9 a.m. Mountain Time the following day. Police responded to reports of an active shooter at around 1:20 p.m. local time. An emergency alert described the suspect as a woman with brown hair wearing a dress, a description that police later confirmed matched the deceased individual. Authorities have not yet released the suspect’s identity or age.
Tumbler Ridge, a community of about 2,400 people located roughly 660 kilometres northeast of Vancouver, is home to a secondary school with around 160 students. School District 59 implemented a “hold and secure” lockdown at both the secondary and elementary schools. Mayor Darryl Krakowka stated he was sheltering in place during the incident and would provide further updates as information becomes available. The district called the shooting a deeply distressing event and encouraged residents to rely on official RCMP updates and support one another in the difficult days ahead. Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting, and no details regarding a possible motive or the identities of the victims have been released.
