Sunny Deol Says His Grandparents' Emotional Partition Memories Inspired Him at 'Batwara 1947' Trailer Launch

Actor Sunny Deol became emotional as he recalled the deeply moving stories his grandparents shared about the 1947 Partition while speaking at the trailer launch of his upcoming film, Batwara 1947, in Mumbai on Tuesday. The film, directed by Rajkumar Santoshi, features Sunny Deol alongside his son Karan Deol. The newly unveiled trailer offers a powerful look at the human cost of Partition and the emotional scars left by one of the most significant events in India's history.

Addressing the media, Sunny said his grandparents had lived through the Partition and often spoke about the fear and uncertainty people experienced during that period. According to him, survival was the only priority as violence spread across villages, forcing families to hide or flee for safety.

He admitted that those personal stories left a lasting impact on him, though he chose not to go into greater detail because of how emotional the memories remain. Sunny also mentioned that having spent much of his childhood in Punjab has kept him closely connected to the region and its history.

Talking about his choice of films, the actor said he prefers stories that are rooted in real emotions and reflect society. He explained that his films are never intended to create controversy but instead aim to connect with audiences through honest storytelling and relatable human experiences. Produced by Aamir Khan Productions and directed by Rajkumar Santoshi, Batwara 1947 features an ensemble cast including Shabana Azmi, Karan Deol, Ali Fazal, and Abhimanyu Singh.

Set during the turbulent days of India's Partition in 1947, the film follows a family whose lives are transformed by violence, displacement, and the breakdown of communities that once lived together peacefully. Despite the tragedy, the story highlights themes of compassion, resilience, and hope in the face of hatred and loss. Batwara 1947 is scheduled to release in cinemas worldwide on August 14, 2026. The film's soundtrack has been composed by A.R. Rahman, with lyrics written by Javed Akhtar.
