South Korea’s trade minister said on Monday that the country could work with Taiwan in dealing with U.S. President Donald Trump’s chip tariffs. In a radio interview, Trade Minister Yeo Han-koo noted that Taiwan is also negotiating with the U.S., creating an opportunity for both sides to cooperate and secure the best possible terms.

Earlier this month, South Korea completed a trade agreement with the U.S. that lowers tariffs in exchange for major South Korean investment in key American industries, while Taiwan’s talks are still underway. Under the deal, the U.S. promised that South Korea’s semiconductor tariffs would be no less favorable than any future agreement with another country involving a similar volume of chip trade — a point South Korean officials say is aimed at competitor Taiwan.

According to a recent Reuters report, U.S. officials are privately indicating that the long-discussed semiconductor tariffs may be delayed, potentially pushing back one of Trump’s major economic goals. A South Korean official declined to say whether there had been direct discussions with Taiwan about the issue. South Korea’s semiconductor exports to the U.S. rose 51.2% in October to $1.2 billion, driven by increased demand for advanced AI-related chips.
