Smart 3 Brabus Review Exciting Electric Drive with Added Practicality

The Smart 1 Brabus stood out last year as one of the most enjoyable cars I had the chance to drive. Its spirited character showed that electric vehicles are capable of delivering a thrilling experience. Now, the Smart 3 Brabus enters the scene, sharing the same powertrain but wrapped in a larger and sleeker body. The question is whether it maintains the same level of excitement as its smaller sibling.
To understand the Smart 3 Brabus, it helps to revisit the brand’s naming strategy. Smart uses odd numbers to indicate size, so the Smart 1 is their smallest electric SUV, the Smart 3 is a bit larger, and the upcoming Smart 5 will be their largest family-sized model. Unlike the more traditional designs of the Smart 1 and Smart 5, the Smart 3 is styled as a coupe-crossover. It is designed to appeal to those who prioritize bold, eye-catching looks over pure practicality.
Despite the design differences, the Smart 1 and Smart 3 share a common platform and drivetrain. The Smart 3 comes in two versions, the Pro Plus with a single motor delivering 268 horsepower and 343 Newton meters of torque, and the more powerful Brabus version with dual motors generating an impressive 422 horsepower and 543 Newton meters. In essence, the Smart 3 is the Smart 1’s larger sibling, more stylish in appearance but still closely tied to its roots.
On the road, the Smart 3 Brabus proves to be incredibly quick, going from zero to 100 kilometers per hour in just 3.7 seconds. This performance level is enough to rival high-end sports cars, which is quite astonishing for an SUV. However, where the Smart 3 sets itself apart is in its more composed and refined driving experience. It is larger than the Smart 1, with increased length and width, and this added size contributes to a smoother, more stable ride. While the Smart 1 Brabus was constantly energetic and eager, the Smart 3 Brabus brings a bit more maturity to the drive. The longer wheelbase enhances comfort at higher speeds, and the suspension feels more forgiving over rough surfaces.
Handling also benefits from the increased size. The Smart 3 Brabus does not feel as hyperactive as the Smart 1, but it offers more grip and stability, making it more confident through corners. Its balanced weight distribution and responsive all-wheel drive system keep the experience enjoyable, just in a more composed manner. In a way, it feels like the Smart 3 Brabus knows when to play and when to relax, whereas the Smart 1 Brabus is always in party mode.
Inside, the larger size of the Smart 3 Brabus provides slightly more room, although the difference is not dramatic. Surprisingly, despite its coupe-like roofline, rear headroom remains reasonable. The panoramic sunroof helps create an airy atmosphere, even though it lacks a retractable shade like the one found in the Smart 1. The interior features a few distinct touches, such as circular air vents and sporty bucket seats with ambient lighting. Otherwise, the cabin remains quite similar, including the large 12.8-inch touchscreen with playful graphics and an easy-to-use interface. The Brabus identity is reinforced with signature elements like red seat belts, a sporty steering wheel, Alcantara trim, and numerous Brabus logos. These touches give the interior a sense of energy and flair that matches the car’s performance character.
However, the Smart 3 Brabus comes with a high price tag. At 259000 with COE in June 2025, it is costly for a compact SUV, especially when compared to larger and more established options from mainstream brands. The annual road tax is also steep at 4415 due to its powerful motor output, which may be a concern for some buyers. Yet, this reflects the way electric cars are currently taxed in certain markets. Overall, the Smart 3 Brabus retains much of the fun and excitement of the Smart 1 Brabus while adding a touch of maturity and practicality. It feels like a grown-up version of its younger sibling, still capable of having fun but now more balanced and composed. For those who enjoy a mix of style, speed, and sensibility, the Smart 3 Brabus could be a perfect fit.
