Running it alone has become overwhelming: Cafe Lilac by Whisking Bakes to close in 2026, looks for a new owner

Another F&B business in Singapore is preparing to close its doors, as Cafe Lilac by Whisking Bakes announced that it will be shutting down in May 2026. The news was shared by founder Chanel Li through an Instagram post on September 1. Launched in 2020, the cafe began as a home-based business after Chanel lost her job as a Scoot flight attendant during the Covid-19 pandemic. Known for its unique taro-inspired desserts and pastries, Cafe Lilac built a loyal following and even catered for South Korean singer-actress IU when she performed in Singapore in April 2024.
In her announcement, Chanel explained that the end of the cafe’s lease, along with the challenges of managing the business alone, led to the decision. “Running this all alone has been exhausting,” she wrote, adding that she has lost her passion and now wishes to step back and pursue new dreams.
The closure news has disappointed many loyal customers, who expressed their sadness and shared fond memories of her taro bakes. One patron commented about missing her signature “taromisu,” which they had ordered for a birthday celebration. Despite the announcement, there may still be hope for the brand. Chanel noted that the cafe would continue operations beyond May 2026 if a passionate new owner steps forward to take over. She has invited interested buyers to reach out.
