Actor Rob McElhenney has officially filed in Los Angeles to change his name to "Rob Mac." The Welcome to Wrexham star previously explained that the change was prompted by the frequent mispronunciation of his last name. In an earlier interview with Variety, he stated, “As our business and storytelling expand globally into regions and languages where my name is even harder to say, I’ve decided to go by Rob Mac.”

McElhenney, who co-owns the Wrexham AFC soccer club with actor Ryan Reynolds, also serves as an executive producer on the FX documentary series Welcome to Wrexham, which chronicles the team’s journey since the duo took over ownership in 2020. In 2023, Reynolds created a musical birthday tribute to McElhenney, enlisting the help of celebrities—including McElhenney’s wife and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia co-star Kaitlin Olson—to humorously teach people how to pronounce his surname.

“Sure, he’s got a pretty face people know they know,” Reynolds sang. “They think they recognize him from his big-time TV show. But despite the accolades, despite the load of fame, one thing they don’t know is how to say his name.” The lyrics clarified the pronunciation, noting that “McElhenney” rhymes with “tackle penny.” The chorus emphasized, “It’s McElhenney, it’s McElhenney—though there are many ways to butcher it, now there won’t be any.”
