Rescue efforts in Uttarkashi gain momentum as helicopters are deployed, says NDRF DIG Chauhan.

Rescue operations have intensified in Uttarkashi after a cloudburst and mudslide stranded several people near Dharali, officials reported. National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) DIG Gambhir Singh Chauhan confirmed to ANI that helicopters are now being used to evacuate those trapped. Due to blocked and damaged roads, four NDRF teams initially struggled to reach Dharali. However, 35 personnel managed to arrive by helicopter. With aerial support now active, movement of rescue teams and evacuees has resumed. Communication issues persisted earlier but have improved since morning with functioning satellite phones.
Rescue efforts are being coordinated by multiple agencies including the Indian Army, NDRF, ITBP, SDRF, local administration, and villagers. Drone footage from Bhatwari showed extensive road damage that hindered early relief efforts. Many of the rescued were pilgrims heading to Gangotri. Arohi Mehra, a tourist from Jalgaon, Maharashtra, expressed fear during the disaster but praised the support from locals and the military. Another tourist, Rupesh Mehra, highlighted the challenges due to roadblocks and praised the use of helicopters in rescue efforts. Anamika Mehra shared her gratitude towards all rescue agencies, especially the Uttarakhand government and Army.
Earlier, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami met with rescue personnel before they departed for affected zones. On Wednesday, approximately 190 people were rescued from Dharali through joint efforts of the Army, Air Force, ITBP, NDRF, SDRF, BRO, and volunteers. Relief and rescue missions are continuing in full force across the region.
