Defence Minister Rajnath Singh held a high-level bilateral meeting with Chinese Defence Minister Admiral Dong Jun on Tuesday, on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Defence Ministers’ meeting in Bishkek. During the same visit, he also engaged in discussions with Russian Defence Minister Andrei Belousov, reflecting India’s continued diplomatic outreach with key regional powers.

Singh’s engagements in the Kyrgyz capital are part of a broader series of strategic interactions aimed at strengthening regional security cooperation and addressing emerging geopolitical challenges. His visit began on a solemn note as he paid tribute to fallen soldiers by laying a wreath at Victory Square, honouring their sacrifice at the start of his official programme.

The Defence Minister reached Bishkek on Monday to participate in the SCO Defence Ministers’ meeting. The discussions at the forum are expected to focus on pressing issues such as regional security dynamics, the ongoing conflict in West Asia, counter-terrorism cooperation, and enhancing defence collaboration among member nations. The Ministry of Defence has noted that the situation in West Asia is likely to remain a key subject of deliberation this year due to its broader impact on global stability.

Before departing from New Delhi, Singh underscored India’s priorities on the global stage, reaffirming the country’s commitment to peace, stability, and its consistent policy of zero tolerance towards terrorism and extremism. He also highlighted the need for collective efforts to address global security challenges.

Upon arrival in Bishkek, Singh was welcomed with a traditional reception, which included the offering of Borsok, a popular Kyrgyz delicacy. Alongside the main SCO summit, he is expected to hold several bilateral meetings with defence counterparts from participating countries to further strengthen defence and security cooperation.

The SCO currently comprises India, China, Russia, Pakistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Iran, and Belarus. India became a full member in 2017 and held the rotating chairmanship in 2023. Founded in 2001 by Russia, China, and several Central Asian states, the organisation has evolved into a significant regional bloc, further expanding with Iran’s inclusion as a full member during India’s presidency.
