Rahul Gandhi Targets PM Modi After US Court Dismisses Gautam Adani Criminal Case

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday stepped up his attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi after a US court dismissed criminal charges against industrialist Gautam Adani and his nephew Sagar Adani. Reacting to the development, Gandhi accused the Prime Minister of compromising India's interests to protect the Adani Group. He alleged that the government had used its influence to secure relief for the industrialist and questioned whether the interests of the country were being placed ahead of those of a private business group.

The remarks came after a US federal court dismissed the criminal case against Gautam Adani and Sagar Adani. The case had stemmed from allegations made by US prosecutors in 2024 involving an alleged bribery scheme connected with solar-energy contracts in India. The Adani Group and the accused have denied the allegations.

The US Department of Justice had sought dismissal of the case, citing legal and jurisdictional considerations. The court subsequently approved the request, ending the criminal proceedings against the accused on the charges covered by the order. The dismissal, however, was not the result of a trial or a jury verdict. The court did not make a finding that the original allegations were proven false. Instead, the prosecution was brought to an end following the government's request to withdraw the charges.

Gandhi has frequently targeted the Modi government over its alleged proximity to the Adani Group. The Congress leader has argued that the relationship between the government and major corporate houses requires greater scrutiny and transparency. The latest development is expected to trigger another round of political confrontation between the Congress and the BJP. While the Congress is using the US court decision to question the government's conduct, the BJP and the government have repeatedly rejected allegations of favouritism towards Adani.

For the Adani Group, the court's decision removes a significant legal uncertainty in the United States. Gautam Adani has welcomed the ruling and reiterated his confidence in the judicial process.
