U.S. chipmaker Qualcomm has announced the launch of a new artificial intelligence research and development (R&D) centre in Vietnam. The facility will focus on developing advanced AI technologies, including generative and agentic AI, for a wide range of applications such as smartphones, personal computers, extended reality (XR), automotive systems, and Internet of Things (IoT) devices.

In a statement, Qualcomm said the initiative aligns with Vietnam’s national strategies in AI, semiconductor development, and digital transformation. The company aims to support these goals through technology transfer, collaboration within the local tech ecosystem, and capacity building in the country.

The launch highlights Qualcomm’s commitment to strengthening its presence in Vietnam and contributing to the growth of its digital and semiconductor industries. The new centre will play a key role in advancing AI innovation in the region, while also creating opportunities for local talent and fostering knowledge exchange.

Vietnam’s President To Lam met with Alex Rogers, Qualcomm’s President of Global Affairs, in Hanoi on Tuesday. During the meeting, To Lam expressed support for Qualcomm’s expansion and encouraged the company to grow its operations further, particularly in areas related to semiconductors and digital infrastructure. With this new R&D centre, Qualcomm joins a growing list of global tech firms investing in Vietnam, positioning the country as a rising hub for innovation and AI development in Southeast Asia.
