Large-scale protests in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir have intensified following deadly clashes that reportedly left nine people dead, highlighting growing public frustration over economic hardship, discriminatory governance, and the authorities' response to dissent.

The protests, led by the Jammu Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC), has drawn thousands of demonstrators demanding relief from inflation, rising electricity tariffs, unemployment, and greater political accountability. Tensions escalated after JAAC was declared a proscribed organization under Pakistan's anti-terrorism laws on June 5.

Various reports have alleged that Pakistan intended to infiltrate operatives linked to Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) into the protest movement as like false-flag operation. The deadliest violence occurred in Sudhnoti district, where a confrontation between protesters and a security convoy escalated into deadly clashes.  Protesters and rights advocates allege that security forces opened fire on demonstrators.

Despite announcing a march toward Muzaffarabad, JAAC supporters remained gathered in Rawalakot, while internet and mobile services were heavily restricted. Although demonstrations have intensified following the deadly clashes, protest leaders insist that their demands remain unmet.

Critics argue that recurring unrest reflects deeper governance and economic challenges, while human rights advocates have urged a transparent investigation into the deaths, accountability for any unlawful use of force, and protection of the rights to peaceful assembly and freedom of expression. Observers warn that without meaningful dialogue and reforms, tensions could flare up again.
