An 18-year-old man was taken into custody on Tuesday, Feb 17, after he ran toward the US Capitol carrying a loaded shotgun, according to officials. US Capitol Police Chief Michael Sullivan said officers responded quickly and arrested the suspect without any injuries or confrontation. Authorities noted that the teenager was dressed in tactical equipment, including a protective vest and gloves, which raised serious concerns about his intentions. However, investigators said the exact motive behind his actions was not immediately clear.

Police also revealed that additional suspicious items were found inside the suspect’s vehicle, including a Kevlar helmet and a gas mask, suggesting a level of preparation. According to Sullivan, the individual arrived shortly after noon in a white Mercedes SUV and parked near the building that serves as the meeting place for the US Congress. After exiting the vehicle, he began running toward the Capitol, prompting officers to quickly intervene. When challenged by police and ordered to drop the weapon, the suspect complied immediately, allowing officers to safely secure him and prevent any escalation.

The incident comes at a time of heightened security concerns in Washington, especially following a recent attack near the White House in which a member of the United States National Guard was killed and another was injured. With Donald Trump scheduled to deliver the upcoming State of the Union address at the Capitol next week, Sullivan emphasized that law enforcement remains fully prepared. He reassured the public that security measures are strong and that authorities are committed to ensuring safety during major national events.
