PM Modi to Visit Canada on December 11-12 as India and Canada Aim to Strengthen Relations

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Canada on December 11–12, 2026, as India and Canada look to strengthen bilateral relations and expand cooperation in trade, energy, technology and other key sectors. The proposed visit comes amid renewed diplomatic engagement between New Delhi and Ottawa, with both countries seeking to build on recent discussions and advance shared economic priorities.
A key focus is expected to be the proposed Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), which aims to expand trade and investment between the two countries. Modi and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney have expressed their commitment to advancing negotiations, with an ambition to double bilateral trade by 2030.
The agreement could create new opportunities for businesses in areas such as manufacturing, agriculture, information technology, financial services and clean energy. Greater market access could also encourage investment and strengthen commercial links between the two economies. Energy and technology are expected to remain important areas of cooperation. Canada’s energy resources and technological expertise could complement India’s growing economic needs, while collaboration in research, innovation and emerging technologies could open new opportunities for both sides.
The two countries are also seeking to strengthen cooperation in security and other strategic areas while maintaining dialogue on issues affecting their relationship. India and Canada have experienced diplomatic tensions in recent years, affecting engagement between their governments. However, renewed high-level discussions have created an opportunity to rebuild confidence and pursue areas of mutual interest. People-to-people connections, including educational exchanges, professional links and business partnerships, remain another important aspect of bilateral relations.
Modi’s planned visit is expected to provide an opportunity for both governments to review progress on existing initiatives and explore further avenues for cooperation. The outcome could help determine how quickly renewed diplomatic engagement translates into concrete economic and strategic benefits. With trade negotiations and broader cooperation high on the agenda, the December visit could mark an important stage in efforts by India and Canada to establish a stronger and more stable bilateral partnership.
