PM Modi says Digital India has grown from a government initiative into a people-driven movement.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi marked 10 years of the ‘Digital India’ initiative by reflecting on its transformative journey in a detailed LinkedIn blog titled "A Decade of Digital India." He described the mission as a people-centric effort to democratize access to technology and build an inclusive digital infrastructure. PM Modi emphasized that, unlike past skepticism about Indians using technology, his government trusted citizens and used tech to bridge social and economic gaps. He noted that Digital India has grown from an initiative into a movement that empowers all sections of society.
Highlighting achievements since 2014, he shared that internet connections have surged from 25 crore to over 97 crore, with over 42 lakh kilometers of optical fibre laid, even reaching remote locations like Siachen and Galwan. India’s 5G rollout is among the world’s fastest. He credited India Stack for enabling platforms like UPI, which now handles over 100 billion transactions annually. Direct Benefit Transfers (DBT) have sent ₹44 lakh crore directly to citizens, saving ₹3.48 lakh crore in leakages.
Initiatives like GeM and ONDC are empowering MSMEs and small entrepreneurs by connecting them directly to markets and government buyers. ONDC recently crossed 200 million transactions, and GeM surpassed ₹1 lakh crore in GMV, with a large number of women-led MSMEs participating. PM Modi also praised India’s Digital Public Infrastructure—tools like Aadhaar, DigiLocker, CoWIN, and FASTag—which are now globally recognized and adopted. India’s digital leadership was highlighted during its G20 Presidency.
With over 1.8 lakh startups, India is now among the top three startup ecosystems in the world. The PM also highlighted India’s AI progress, noting initiatives like the India AI Mission and global efforts promoting responsible, inclusive AI. Looking ahead, he envisioned a shift from “digital governance” to “global digital leadership,” calling on innovators and entrepreneurs to lead the way. He concluded by asserting that Digital India is now a people-driven movement, key to building an Aatmanirbhar Bharat and making India a global tech leader.
