PM Modi Accorded Traditional Maori Powhiri at Government House in Auckland

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was welcomed with a traditional Māori pōwhiri ceremony at Government House in Auckland on Saturday, marking the beginning of the official engagements during his visit to New Zealand. The ceremonial reception reflected New Zealand's recognition of its Indigenous Māori heritage and served as a gesture of respect for the visiting Indian leader.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said the Prime Minister received a warm ceremonial welcome that showcased New Zealand's rich cultural traditions. The pōwhiri is one of the country's most significant Māori customs, traditionally reserved for welcoming distinguished guests and fostering goodwill before formal interactions.
Following the ceremony, Prime Minister Modi held bilateral talks with his New Zealand counterpart, Prime Minister Christopher Luxon. The discussions focused on strengthening cooperation in areas such as trade, investment, defence, education, technology, and regional security, as both nations seek to deepen their strategic partnership in the Indo-Pacific. Expressing his gratitude, Modi described the traditional welcome as a tribute to New Zealand's rich cultural heritage. He also highlighted the shared values between Indian and Māori traditions, particularly their emphasis on respect for nature, community, and sustainable living.
The visit is considered a significant milestone in India-New Zealand relations, as it is the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to New Zealand in four decades. Both countries are expected to expand cooperation across multiple sectors, including economic ties, maritime security, innovation, and people-to-people exchanges.
The Indian diaspora, one of the fastest-growing communities in New Zealand, is also expected to play an important role in further strengthening bilateral relations. Analysts believe the visit could provide fresh momentum to ongoing efforts aimed at enhancing cooperation between the two democracies amid evolving geopolitical dynamics in the Indo-Pacific region.
