OpenAI has claimed a potentially historic breakthrough in mathematics, saying its artificial intelligence system has produced a solution to the Navier-Stokes problem, one of the most difficult unanswered questions in modern mathematics. The Navier-Stokes problem has challenged mathematicians for more than 90 years. It focuses on equations that describe how fluids such as air and water move. Although scientists have used these equations for decades in areas including engineering, physics and fluid dynamics, mathematicians have yet to establish whether certain three-dimensional solutions remain smooth indefinitely or can develop a singularity in a finite amount of time.

A correct solution to one of these problems carries a $1 million prize.

OpenAI's announcement does not automatically mean that the problem has been officially solved. The proposed proof must still undergo detailed examination by independent mathematicians. Researchers will need to determine whether every part of the argument is correct and whether it addresses the exact problem posed by the Clay Mathematics Institute.

That distinction is particularly important in mathematics, where even a small gap in a proof can invalidate an otherwise impressive result. Computer-assisted verification can provide powerful support, but independent experts still need to assess the mathematical reasoning and confirm that the argument satisfies the original requirements.

The development has also raised questions about the growing role of artificial intelligence in mathematical research.
