OpenAI Announces Free ChatGPT Access for Researchers: Here's What the Initiative Includes

OpenAI has unveiled "ChatGPT for Academic Researchers," a new initiative that will provide free access to its most advanced artificial intelligence models to 100,000 researchers by 2027. The programme is aimed at scientists, engineers and mathematicians working on cutting-edge research, with the goal of helping them accelerate discoveries, improve productivity and tackle complex scientific challenges using AI.
The rollout will begin later this year with an initial group of 10,000 researchers before gradually expanding over the next two years to reach 100,000 participants worldwide. The initiative is part of OpenAI's broader commitment to invest more than $250 million in scientific research and innovation through 2027. This investment also includes the company's NextGenAI programme and collaborations such as the Department of Energy's Genesis Mission, which brings advanced AI tools to researchers at universities and national laboratories.
Researchers accepted into the programme will receive free access to OpenAI's frontier AI models through ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work and Codex, including the latest GPT-5.6 family of models. OpenAI says these tools are designed to assist with a wide range of research tasks, including analysing large datasets, testing scientific hypotheses, reviewing literature, writing grant proposals, preparing research papers and managing long-term research projects.
The company is also expanding specialised research capabilities through features such as Deep Research, higher usage limits and significantly larger context windows, allowing users to analyse lengthy documents and complex datasets more efficiently. For researchers working in life sciences, the programme includes access to more than 75 specialised AI skills covering genetics, genomics, sequencing, protein modelling, drug discovery and single-cell analysis. Participants will also be able to connect ChatGPT with scientific literature databases, genomic and clinical datasets, satellite imagery, computational notebooks and reference management platforms, making research workflows more seamless.
According to OpenAI, the latest GPT-5.6 models demonstrate notable improvements in advanced reasoning. The company says GPT-5.6 Sol achieved an 83% score on the FrontierMath Tier 4 benchmark, compared with 72.5% for GPT-5.5, while also improving performance on scientific reasoning tests such as GeneBench Pro. These upgrades are intended to make the models more capable of handling research-level mathematical and scientific problems.
Beyond providing AI tools, OpenAI plans to offer dedicated training sessions and ongoing support to help researchers integrate artificial intelligence into their work. The training will cater to users with different levels of AI experience, ranging from introductory workshops to advanced sessions focused on scientific research. Participants will also have opportunities to collaborate with peers, exchange best practices and provide feedback that could shape future versions of the programme.
The initiative is initially open to qualified researchers affiliated with selected academic institutions. Applicants will need to verify their institutional affiliation, describe their active research projects and explain how they intend to use the platform. Approved researchers will also be allowed to invite up to four collaborators from the same institution, provided each collaborator completes the required verification process. Institutions already using ChatGPT Edu will have researcher access integrated into their existing academic workspaces.
While the new programme offers free access to eligible researchers, OpenAI continues to provide several subscription options for general users. The platform remains available through a free plan with basic capabilities, while paid plans such as Go, Plus, Pro and Team offer higher usage limits, access to more advanced AI models and additional features tailored to professionals, developers and businesses. With the launch of ChatGPT for Academic Researchers, OpenAI is making one of its biggest investments yet in the scientific community. By offering advanced AI models, specialised research tools and dedicated training at no cost, the company hopes to help researchers reduce routine workloads, analyse complex information more efficiently and ultimately speed up scientific discovery across a wide range of disciplines.
