Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to those who lost their lives in the Pahalgam terror attack on its first anniversary and extended his support to their families. In a message on X, he emphasized that the victims would always be remembered, calling the April 22, 2025 incident a tragedy that still weighs heavily on the nation. He reaffirmed that India remains resolute and will not give in to terrorism.

He expressed condolences to the grieving families, stating that the country stands united in both sorrow and determination, and stressed that the intentions of terrorists will never succeed. The tribute comes as families continue to cope with their loss. The attack, which occurred last year in south Kashmir’s Pahalgam, claimed the lives of 26 people, most of them tourists, and sparked outrage across the country.

In retaliation, India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7, targeting terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. Shortly before the Prime Minister’s statement, the Indian Army reiterated that any hostile acts against India would be met with assured justice. Previously, the Army had issued a strong warning, stating that when humanity’s limits are crossed, the response would be firm and decisive. Reports indicated that victims were separated based on religion before being killed, further intensifying public anger.

Operation Sindoor led to the destruction of multiple terror bases linked to groups such as Lashkar-e-Taiba, Jaish-e-Mohammed, and Hizbul Mujahideen, with over 100 militants eliminated. Pakistan’s counteraction resulted in a brief escalation lasting four days, which ended in a ceasefire on May 10 after a request from Islamabad.

Following this, Indian forces carried out Operation Mahadev, successfully tracking down and eliminating the three attackers responsible for the incident. Authorities in Jammu and Kashmir have heightened security in Pahalgam, increasing surveillance and deploying additional forces to ensure a peaceful remembrance event. A memorial has also been built in Baisaran Valley to honor the victims. Made of black marble, it displays the names of all 26 individuals who lost their lives and stands along the Lidder River as a lasting tribute.
