SEOUL — North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has defended his country’s participation in the Russia-Ukraine war, calling it a legitimate act within North Korea’s sovereign rights to support an allied nation. According to a report by state media outlet KCNA on Saturday (May 10), Kim referred to Russia as a "brother nation" and described North Korea’s involvement as just and necessary.

"Our engagement in the conflict is justified and entirely consistent with the sovereign authority of our Republic," Kim stated. He went on to praise the North Korean troops involved in the so-called Kursk operation, referring to them as heroes and proud representatives of the nation's honor. Kim also issued a strong warning to the United States, saying that if Washington continues its military provocations against Russia, Pyongyang would not hesitate to respond with force. He framed this potential response as a defensive measure aligned with North Korea’s right to protect its allies.

While speculation had circulated for months, it was not until late April that North Korea officially confirmed its military involvement in the Russia-Ukraine conflict. The announcement revealed that Pyongyang had sent more than 10,000 troops and military equipment to assist Russian forces. This military cooperation comes in the wake of a broad strategic partnership agreement signed last year between Kim Jong Un and Russian President Vladimir Putin, marking a significant strengthening of bilateral ties. The developments reflect a growing alignment between North Korea and Russia, raising concerns among Western powers about expanding military cooperation and the potential for further escalation in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
