Netflix is bringing Stephen King’s horror classic Cujo back to life with a new adaptation. Originally made into a film in 1983, the story followed a suburban housewife, played by Dee Wallace, whose life spirals into terror. Now, Deadline has confirmed that the streaming giant has secured the rights for a remake.
Producer Roy Lee is on board, and Netflix is actively searching for writers to develop the script. However, no casting details or release date have been announced yet. The first adaptation of Cujo was a moderate box office success, and in 2015, Sunn Classic Pictures planned a remake titled C.U.J.O., though it never came to fruition.
Stephen King once admitted that he has “no recollection” of writing Cujo due to his struggles with addiction at the time. Speaking to Rolling Stone, he described his obsessive writing habits, revealing that he writes daily for months before forcing himself to take a break—though those breaks tend to drive his wife crazy.
Cujo was one of King’s first novels to be adapted into a film, paving the way for other classics. Stand By Me, based on his novella The Body, became a beloved coming-of-age story, while Misery won Kathy Bates an Oscar for her role as Annie Wilkes. More recent adaptations include Mr. Harrigan’s Phone and The Boogeyman.
King’s works have a long legacy in cinema. Carrie, the first to be adapted, made Sissy Spacek a star, while The Shining, featuring Jack Nicholson and Shelley Duvall, became a horror icon. His novel It was first adapted as a miniseries in the 1990s before being reimagined in 2017, with Bill Skarsgård portraying Pennywise the Clown.
