US Secretary of State Marco Rubio recently concluded his four-day visit to India and shared his reflections on visiting the Mother House in Kolkata, paying tribute to the enduring legacy of Mother Teresa. In a post on X, Rubio described the experience as deeply emotional and said Mother Teresa’s message of compassion, faith, and selfless service continues to inspire people across the globe.

“Deeply moved by my visit to Mother House. Mother Teresa’s legacy of faith, compassion, and service inspires us all,” Rubio wrote after the visit. The Missionaries of Charity was one of the first places Rubio visited during his India tour. Accompanied by his wife, Jeanette D. Rubio, he visited Nirmala Shishu Bhavan in Kolkata, a children’s home run by the Missionaries of Charity. The institution is part of the global humanitarian network founded by Mother Teresa in 1950 to care for abandoned and underprivileged children.

Rubio and his wife also visited the Mother House in central Kolkata, which serves as the global headquarters of the Missionaries of Charity. His visit drew attention as the last US Secretary of State to travel to Kolkata was Hillary Clinton in 2012. Apart from Kolkata, Rubio visited the Taj Mahal and Amer Fort. In New Delhi, he met Narendra Modi, Ajit Doval, and S. Jaishankar, and participated in the QUAD Foreign Ministers’ Meeting. India and the United States also signed a Critical Minerals Framework to strengthen cooperation in advanced technology and clean energy supply chains.
