Maharashtra Weather Update: BMC Issues Public Advisory After IMD Releases 3-Hour Orange Alert

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), based on updates from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), issued an Orange alert for Mumbai on Monday, warning of possible thunderstorms, lightning, moderate to heavy rainfall, and strong winds between 30-40 kmph in isolated areas over the next three hours.
As per the IMD’s nowcast alert shared by the civic body, weather activity is expected to remain intense in several parts of Mumbai. Authorities have advised residents to stay cautious and follow safety measures during periods of heavy rain, thunderstorms, and lightning. Several locations across Mumbai, including Bandra East, experienced pre-monsoon showers along with thunderstorms and lightning on Monday morning. While the rainfall brought some relief from the ongoing heat and humidity, it also led to water accumulation in certain areas and affected traffic movement.
Mumbai is likely to witness the arrival of the southwest monsoon either later today or by Tuesday. However, the IMD will officially declare the monsoon onset only after confirming that all required conditions and weather parameters have been fulfilled. In its latest forecast, the IMD stated that conditions remain favourable for the southwest monsoon to advance further into parts of Maharashtra, Telangana, Odisha, Jharkhand, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, and other regions around June 23.
The weather agency also predicted that very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall is likely to continue over parts of Northeast India until June 25, while Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim may receive intense rainfall until June 22. At the same time, the IMD has issued a warning about ongoing heatwave conditions in several regions. Vidarbha, East Madhya Pradesh, and East Uttar Pradesh are expected to experience heatwave to severe heatwave conditions for the next four to five days. Similar conditions may continue in Chhattisgarh, Telangana, Madhya Maharashtra, and Marathwada for varying durations.
The forecast further indicated that Konkan and Goa may receive scattered rainfall between June 21 and 22, with rainfall activity expected to increase into widespread showers from June 23 to June 27. The IMD has also cautioned about isolated thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds across Konkan, Goa, and Marathwada between June 22 and 25. Wind speeds could reach 40-50 kmph, with gusts up to 60 kmph, while isolated heavy rainfall is likely in parts of Konkan and Goa during the same period.
