Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, along with State Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik, visited the Tesla showroom in Mumbai ahead of its official inauguration later today. The electric vehicle (EV) giant Tesla is set to launch its first showroom in India on Tuesday morning at Maker Maxity Mall, located in the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), Mumbai.

Last Friday, Tesla teased its India debut via its India-specific X (formerly Twitter) account, posting a "Coming soon" message alongside a graphic suggesting its entry into the Indian market this month, July 2025. While there has been ongoing speculation about Tesla's future plans in India, Union Minister for Heavy Industries, H.D. Kumaraswamy, clarified in June that Tesla is not currently pursuing local manufacturing. Instead, the company intends to sell its cars in India through showrooms.

Previous reports indicated Tesla’s preference to import vehicles for sale rather than set up production facilities within India. However, the company has remained tight-lipped regarding its broader strategy for the Indian market. In a notable development earlier this year, Tesla began recruiting for various roles in India, signaling progress toward its market entry.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has shown interest in investing in India in the past but raised concerns about the country’s high import duties, which were seen as a barrier. India’s newly introduced EV policy, which offers reduced import taxes and incentives to attract global EV makers, could ease Tesla’s path into the Indian market.

In April, Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a phone conversation with Elon Musk to explore possible collaborations in technology and innovation, following a meeting in the U.S. in February. With the Mumbai showroom opening, Tesla is expected to test the waters in India’s rapidly expanding automobile sector and establish a foundation for its premium electric vehicles.
