Keanu Reeves has officially confirmed that a story for Constantine 2 is ready. The 60-year-old actor, who played the iconic demonologist John Constantine in the 2005 film, revealed that he and director Francis Lawrence are finally making progress on the long-awaited sequel.
Speaking to Inverse, Reeves shared that he and Lawrence have been pushing for this movie for over a decade. "We recently put a story together and pitched it to DC Studios, and they said, 'Okay.' So now, we're going to try and write a script," he said. While he didn’t reveal any plot details, he assured fans that the sequel would remain in the same universe as the original—promising an even more tormented journey for Constantine.
His update comes shortly after director Francis Lawrence told Collider that the sequel is closer to becoming a reality than ever before. "Keanu, [producer] Akiva Goldsman, and I are super excited. We've gone through a lot of the comics and explored different ideas, but most of the story is coming from our own love for the character and world," Lawrence explained.
Last year, Lawrence revealed that they had actively started working on a script. The idea of a sequel had been circulating for years, but momentum only picked up in 2020 when the team revisited the project during a Zoom call. After years of overcoming studio hurdles, Warner Bros. officially announced the sequel in 2022.
This time, Constantine 2 will fully embrace its R-rating. Lawrence acknowledged that while the first film was intended to be PG-13, it was ultimately given an R-rating. "So we figured—let’s lean into it and make a real R-rated movie," he said. With the passion of Reeves, Lawrence, and the team behind it, Constantine 2 is finally shaping up to become the dark, gritty sequel fans have been waiting for.
