In a swift move amid public outcry, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has suspended K. Ramachandra Rao, the state's Director General of Police for Civil Rights Enforcement, following the circulation of a controversial video on social media. The 1993-batch IPS officer, known for his long career in policing, now faces an official probe as authorities verify the clip's authenticity.

The suspension order came hours after the video surfaced online around January 18, 2026, showing what appears to be Rao in compromising situations with women in what looks like an office environment. CM Siddaramaiah stressed zero tolerance for misconduct, stating no rank protects anyone from accountability, and directed a thorough investigation. Rao, restricted to headquarters during this period, has called the footage "fabricated and false," promising legal steps against those responsible.

A veteran officer, Rao took the DGP role in September 2023 after heading the Karnataka State Police Housing Corporation. His tenure included stints as Inspector General for the Southern Range, where he handled a 2014 cash seizure controversy near Mysuru—though he denied any police lapses. Family connections added scrutiny: as stepfather to actress Ranya Rao, arrested in 2025 for alleged gold smuggling, he was briefly on leave before his promotion.

This development highlights persistent issues in Indian law enforcement, where personal scandals can undermine public faith in civil rights guardians. With social media accelerating such exposures, the case may spark debates on ethics reforms and officer conduct training. Updates will follow as the inquiry progresses.
