Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday completed 25 years at the helm of a government, marking a political journey that began with his appointment as Gujarat Chief Minister on October 7, 2001. Congratulatory messages poured in from political leaders in India and abroad, including Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, Union ministers and several chief ministers.

Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi congratulated Modi on the milestone and recalled the close ties between India and Japan. She said she looked forward to continuing to work with him to further strengthen the two countries' Special Strategic and Global Partnership. Union Home Minister Amit Shah also extended his greetings to Modi, describing the 25-year journey as one marked by dedication to public service and the principle of putting the nation first.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said Modi's long political journey reflected his commitment to development and public welfare. Singh noted that Modi served as Gujarat Chief Minister for more than 12 years before becoming Prime Minister in 2014. Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan described the milestone as historic and credited Modi's leadership with giving greater emphasis to development, welfare and the goal of building a developed and self-reliant India.

Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan also congratulated Modi, highlighting what he described as his focus on inclusive development, digital transformation, infrastructure and expanding opportunities for citizens. Several chief ministers also joined the greetings. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said Modi's 25-year journey represented a long period of national service, while Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami and other leaders also conveyed their wishes.

The Union Cabinet had on Tuesday adopted a special resolution congratulating Modi for completing 25 years of uninterrupted leadership at the head of a government. The resolution highlighted initiatives associated with his tenure in Gujarat and later policies introduced at the national level. The Cabinet cited programmes such as SWAGAT and Jyotigram in Gujarat and drew parallels with national initiatives including PRAGATI. It also highlighted the government's work in areas such as infrastructure, financial inclusion, digital payments, housing, drinking water, manufacturing, technology and defence.

Modi became Prime Minister in May 2014 after the BJP secured a majority in the Lok Sabha. He subsequently led the party to victories in the 2019 and 2024 general elections, beginning his third consecutive term as Prime Minister in June 2024. His supporters have highlighted infrastructure expansion, welfare schemes, digital public infrastructure, economic reforms and India's growing international engagement as key features of his tenure. Critics, meanwhile, have continued to raise questions over several government policies, making his 25-year political journey a subject of intense public and political debate.

The milestone comes as the government continues to promote its long-term vision of building a developed India by 2047, when the country will mark 100 years of Independence. With messages from leaders across India and abroad, October 7 marks a significant milestone in Modi's political career, completing 25 years since he first assumed the responsibility of heading a government in Gujarat.
