External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Iranian Foreign Minister Seyyed Abbas Araghchi on Friday held a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in New Delhi, focusing on regional developments and strengthening cooperation between the two countries. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also met Araghchi in a significant diplomatic engagement aimed at enhancing regional stability and boosting multilateral cooperation between India and Iran. The meeting marked another important step in the growing partnership between the two historic civilisational nations.

The Iranian Embassy in India shared details of the interaction on X, confirming that Foreign Minister Araghchi met Prime Minister Modi during his visit to New Delhi for the BRICS ministerial gathering. Speaking at the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, Araghchi strongly criticised what he called “US bullying” and urged member nations to collectively resist coercive policies. He stated that many countries represented at the forum had experienced similar pressures and called for stronger unity among BRICS members.

According to Araghchi, the current global situation demands closer coordination among emerging economies. He said that nations must work together to ensure that unilateral and coercive practices become part of the “dustbin of history.” The Iranian Foreign Minister also remarked that countries across the world are facing common geopolitical challenges and warned that declining global powers often react aggressively to preserve their influence.

The BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, chaired by India on May 14 and 15 in New Delhi, brought together key global leaders and diplomats. The gathering highlighted the increasing strategic importance of BRICS as a major platform for dialogue, cooperation, and diplomatic engagement, particularly at a time of heightened tensions and instability in West Asia and other regions.
