Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has recently met Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei, Iranian state media reported, in a meeting that has drawn attention amid growing questions about the supreme leader’s health and his limited public appearances. The meeting reportedly took place in late July and included discussions on military affairs and several major economic issues facing Iran. According to state media, the talks covered foreign-exchange management, energy consumption, allocation of resources and Iran’s economic relations with other countries.

The reported encounter comes at a sensitive time for Iran, with Mojtaba Khamenei having remained largely out of public view since taking over as supreme leader following the death of his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in February. Ali Khamenei was killed in a February 28 strike, and reports have said that Mojtaba Khamenei was also injured in the attack.

His limited public presence since becoming supreme leader has fuelled speculation about his health. Iranian officials have provided few details about his medical condition, while various reports have made differing claims about the severity of his injuries. There has been no independent medical confirmation establishing the full extent of his condition.

The latest meeting with Pezeshkian is therefore significant as Tehran seeks to demonstrate that the country's highest leadership remains engaged in major political, military and economic decisions. The Iranian president had previously indicated that he was maintaining contact with the supreme leader, although he later described communication with Khamenei as difficult.

Iranian authorities have also taken steps to counter speculation surrounding the supreme leader’s health. Iranian media recently released rare footage purportedly showing Mojtaba Khamenei, while a senior Basij official said additional footage of the supreme leader meeting members of the armed forces and appearing in public would be released.

The absence of clear dates and independent verification for some of the footage has left questions about Khamenei’s current condition unanswered. The reported Pezeshkian-Khamenei meeting also comes as Iran continues to face significant economic and security challenges. Issues such as currency management, energy supplies and resource allocation remain critical for the government, while regional tensions continue to place pressure on Tehran’s leadership.

Mojtaba Khamenei's role is particularly important because Iran's supreme leader holds ultimate authority over the country's armed forces and plays a decisive role in major foreign and security policy decisions. Any uncertainty surrounding the leader’s health or ability to govern can therefore have wider political and strategic implications.

The reported meeting provides evidence that Pezeshkian and Khamenei have maintained direct contact, but it does not independently resolve the questions surrounding the supreme leader’s health. With Iranian authorities promising more footage and information, international attention is likely to remain focused on Mojtaba Khamenei’s public appearances and his involvement in Iran’s decision-making process.
