India and Sri Lanka strengthen maritime ties during the fourth edition of their joint diving exercise.

India and Sri Lanka have reinforced their naval partnership during the fourth edition of their bilateral diving exercise currently taking place in Colombo. In a post on X, the Indian Navy spokesperson stated that the ongoing exercise is strengthening maritime cooperation and professional camaraderie, with mixed-gas diving operations off Colombo showcasing precision, expertise, and seamless interoperability underwater.
The Indian naval vessel INS Nireekshak reached Colombo on April 21 to participate in IN-SLN DIVEX 2026, scheduled from April 21 to April 27. As per the Ministry of Defence, the week-long exercise brings together diving teams from both nations to conduct specialised underwater operations and training drills. The initiative aims to improve coordination, enhance interoperability, and enable the exchange of best practices between the two navies.
Upon arrival, INS Nireekshak received a ceremonial welcome from the Sri Lankan Navy, including a naval band reception. Commanding Officer Commander Sailesh Tyagi held discussions with Rear Admiral SJ Kumara, Flag Officer Commanding Western Naval Area, focusing on mutual interests and opportunities to deepen cooperation.
The visit includes social engagements, sports events, and joint yoga sessions to build goodwill and strengthen bonds between naval personnel. As part of India’s humanitarian efforts, the ship will also hand over two BHISM cubes under the Aarogya Maitri initiative. These portable medical units are capable of handling up to 200 emergency cases and are equipped with essential medicines and basic surgical facilities.
Further enhancing maritime security cooperation, the Indian Navy will provide 50,000 rounds of 9 mm ammunition to the Sri Lankan Navy. The IN-SLN DIVEX exercise highlights the strong maritime relationship between the two nations and reflects their shared commitment to regional stability and cooperation in the Indian Ocean, in line with India’s MAHASAGAR vision for collective growth and security.
