Ilhan Omar Taps Former Biden Attorney as Federal Probe Continues After Legal Fundraising Appeal

US Representative Ilhan Omar has hired two prominent attorneys, including a former personal lawyer to President Joe Biden, as she faces an ongoing federal investigation. The move comes days after the Minnesota Democrat asked supporters to contribute towards her legal expenses. Omar has retained Amy Jeffress, who previously served as Biden’s personal attorney, and Joshua Matz, a lawyer who represented House Democrats during Donald Trump’s two impeachment proceedings. Both attorneys are partners at the Washington-based law firm Hecker Fink, according to media reports.
The appointment comes as federal authorities examine questions surrounding Omar’s immigration history and financial disclosures. The investigation has attracted significant political attention, with Omar denying wrongdoing and describing the scrutiny as politically motivated. The congresswoman recently appealed to supporters for financial assistance, asking for small contributions to help cover the costs of her legal defence. Her fundraising request highlighted the potential expense of responding to a complex federal investigation.
The case has drawn further attention following a reported federal search of Omar’s Washington, DC, residence on October 12. Investigators reportedly seized electronic devices and other materials as part of their inquiry. Omar’s legal team has challenged aspects of the search and sought the return of seized property. Omar arrived in the United States from Somalia as a refugee in 1995 and became a naturalised American citizen in 2000. Investigators are examining questions relating to her immigration records, although the allegations have not been established as fact.
The inquiry is unfolding amid longstanding political tensions between Omar and Trump, who has repeatedly criticised the Democratic lawmaker. Omar has accused the administration of targeting her for political reasons, while federal authorities have maintained that the investigation is proceeding through legal channels. Jeffress and Matz bring experience in high-profile legal disputes involving public officials. Their appointment is expected to strengthen Omar’s defence as her legal team examines the government's actions and responds to the investigation.
The case has also drawn attention to financial disclosures involving businesses associated with Omar’s husband, political consultant Tim Mynett. Questions surrounding reported business valuations have featured in public discussion, although the congresswoman has defended her financial reporting. The investigation remains ongoing, and no conclusion has been reached regarding the allegations. Omar’s decision to hire experienced attorneys marks a significant development in the case, but its outcome will depend on the evidence and any subsequent legal proceedings.
