Assam Congress President Gaurav Gogoi on Thursday said he may make a courtesy call to Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren, as the JMM is considering entering Assam’s electoral politics ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections. Speaking in Ranchi, Gogoi said Soren had recently visited Assam and added that any discussions would take place formally rather than through the media.

His remarks came after JMM chief Hemant Soren visited Assam earlier this week, where he called for tribal unity and attended Iftar celebrations. Gogoi also said the Assam Congress is seeking support from Jharkhand leaders for the upcoming polls. He noted that the AICC has appointed Bandhu Tirkey as a senior observer, who has toured districts in Assam to understand local issues. According to Gogoi, the visit aims to explore how Jharkhand Congress leaders can help strengthen the party and guide Assam’s political direction.

He is expected to contest the Assembly elections from the Jorhat constituency. Congress leader Pawan Khera said discussions on seat sharing with alliance partners are ongoing and based on ground surveys and public opinion. Criticizing Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Khera said the party’s confidence comes from the situation on the ground and accused the government of corruption. Assam will hold Assembly elections later this year, with the BJP aiming for a third consecutive term while Congress hopes to return to power.
