India's para powerlifter Jhandu Kumar dedicated his bronze medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games to the years of struggle and determination that shaped his journey, saying the hardships he faced only strengthened his resolve to succeed. After securing bronze in the men's heavyweight para powerlifting event on Friday, an emotional Jhandu reflected on the challenges he overcame before reaching the international stage. Speaking after the event, he said he once earned a living by driving an e-rickshaw and selling vegetables but never allowed financial difficulties to distract him from his dream of representing India.

"I drove an e-rickshaw, sold vegetables and faced many hardships to make ends meet. Despite everything, I never stopped believing that one day I would win a medal for India," he said. Jhandu delivered an impressive performance in the competition, finishing at the top of Group B with a best lift score of 130.9. His effort placed him ahead of Uganda's Dennis Mbaziira, who managed 114.1, and Australia's Ben Wright, who recorded 110.9, earning Jhandu a place among the medal contenders.

When the results from both groups were combined, Nigeria's Riluwan Idris claimed the gold medal with the highest overall lift of 132.8, while England's Matthew Harding secured silver with 131.0. Jhandu's score of 130.9 earned him the bronze, missing the silver medal by just 0.1 in a tightly fought contest.
