French Army Chief Eyes Indian Long-Range Rockets & Battlefield Tech for Deeper Defense Ties

India and France are poised to deepen their defense collaboration following keen interest expressed by French Army Chief General Pierre Schill in Indian long-range weapon systems. Highlighting the impressive performance of Indian military technology during Operation Sindoor, General Schill specifically noted India's advanced long-range rockets, loitering munitions, and counter-drone technologies as areas ripe for joint exploration and potential acquisition.
During his recent visit to New Delhi for the UN Troop Contributing Countries Chiefs conference, General Schill emphasized France's focus on renewing its own artillery capabilities, including a potential acquisition of the indigenous Pinaka rocket system. The Pinaka system, developed by India's Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), is already recognized for its precision, cost-effectiveness, and operational success. France has seen demonstrations of these systems and is assessing longer-range variants to complement its modernization efforts.
Beyond acquiring weapons, the French Army Chief also underlined opportunities to co-develop cutting-edge battlefield technologies, particularly in artificial intelligence (AI) and electronic warfare (EW). Both countries are interested in leveraging AI-driven command and targeting systems, which could radically enhance battlefield situational awareness and responsiveness amidst modern hybrid warfare challenges.
India’s innovative counter-drone platform, SAKSHAM, and loitering munitions have garnered French attention for their operational versatility and real-time effectiveness in complex combat scenarios. This interest symbolizes a strategic alignment where India’s defense self-reliance meets France’s ambition to diversify defense partnerships beyond Europe.
The cooperation is not limited to technology; the two armies are considering institutionalizing and expanding bilateral training exercises beyond the existing Shakti series. These exercises may soon include advanced modules on unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) operations, electronic warfare, and counter-drone tactics, reflecting the shift towards integrated, high-technology military readiness.
This evolving partnership is significant in the context of global defense dynamics, highlighting India’s rising stature as a source of advanced defense technology and France’s openness to innovative defense solutions. Such collaboration promises to strengthen both nations’ military capabilities and contribute to greater security cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region. The French Army Chief's interest marks a new chapter of Indo-French defense ties centered on emerging battlefield technologies, shaping a future where collaboration around long-range precision weapons, AI, and electronic warfare is likely to play a pivotal role in the partnership’s growth.
