India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar said on Thursday that the BRICS alliance is expected to act as a “constructive and stabilising force” at a time when the world is facing major geopolitical shifts, economic instability, and challenges linked to trade, technology, and climate governance. Speaking at the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in New Delhi, Jaishankar noted that ongoing conflicts and global uncertainties are transforming international relations and increasing expectations from emerging economies to contribute toward stability and cooperation.

He stressed that peace and security continue to remain at the heart of the global order, adding that recent conflicts have reinforced the importance of diplomacy, dialogue, and stronger international cooperation against terrorism. Jaishankar also highlighted that many developing nations are still struggling with issues such as energy security, food shortages, fertiliser supply, healthcare access, and financial constraints. According to him, BRICS nations can work together to address these concerns more effectively.

Focusing on economic resilience, he said dependable supply chains and diversified markets are essential for maintaining stable global growth and reducing vulnerabilities in the international economy. On climate change, Jaishankar described it as an urgent global issue and emphasized that climate-related discussions should support sustainable development while respecting fairness and the principle of “common but differentiated responsibilities.”

He further pointed out that rapid technological advancements are reshaping governance and economic systems worldwide, adding that such changes should be used to encourage inclusive growth and improve global governance frameworks. The BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, being held from May 14 to May 15, is part of wider efforts to strengthen coordination among member nations on economic governance, development priorities, and geopolitical matters. India assumed the BRICS chairmanship on January 1, taking over from Brazil. This is the fourth time India has led the grouping after previously hosting BRICS summits in 2012, 2016, and 2021.
