CBI Takes Over Investigation Into Mysterious Death of Former Punjab DGP's Son

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has officially taken charge of the investigation into the mysterious death of Aqil Akhter, son of former Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) Mohammad Mustafa. Aqil, aged 35, was found dead last month in his residence located in the Mansa Devi Complex, Sector 4, Panchkula. Originally looked into by the Panchkula police, the probe was transferred to the CBI following the Haryana government's request for a deeper and independent inquiry due to the case's sensitive nature and emerging allegations.
The case has drawn significant attention as the CBI has registered a First Information Report (FIR) naming four family members—Mustafa, his wife and ex-PWD minister Razia Sultana, their daughter, and Aqil's wife—under charges of murder and criminal conspiracy as per the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023. These legal provisions reflect the serious nature of the allegations being investigated.
What makes this case particularly compelling is the social media dimension. In a video posted on August 27, Aqil Akhter alleged an illicit relationship involving his father and his own wife, alongside claims that his family was conspiring against him—either to harm him or falsely implicate him. This revelation has intensified the probe, prompting the CBI to delve into possible family discord and conspiracy motives surrounding Aqil’s untimely death.
The investigation now encompasses forensic analysis, examination of digital evidence including social media posts and call records, and scrutiny of the circumstances leading up to Aqil’s death. Despite the family asserting he died due to a drug overdose, the post-mortem and viscera reports have not conclusively established the cause of death, fueling further suspicion and investigative rigor by the CBI.
This case highlights the challenges that law enforcement faces when familial disputes intertwine with criminal investigations, especially involving high-profile individuals. It also underlines the growing impact of social media disclosures in sparking official probes. As the CBI takes a measured, impartial approach, the nation watches closely, awaiting clarity on this tragic and complex case.
The CBI’s takeover marks a crucial step in the pursuit of justice for Aqil Akhter, ensuring that the investigation is handled with due diligence and transparency, beyond local jurisdictional constraints. The involvement of senior officials and family members as accused underscores how even prominent families are subject to legal scrutiny in cases of suspicious deaths, reflecting the rule of law’s reach.
