Brazilian tourist discovered dead in Indonesia four days after going missing on volcano cliff.

A Brazilian tourist who went missing after falling from a cliff while hiking on Indonesia’s second-highest volcano was found dead on Tuesday (June 24), according to the Brazilian government. Rescue operations had been delayed due to poor weather and difficult terrain. Juliana Marins, 27, was trekking with five friends on Mount Rinjani on Saturday when she slipped and fell down a cliff, Indonesian officials reported. The 3,726-meter volcano, located in West Nusa Tenggara province, is an active and well-known tourist destination in Indonesia.
In a statement, Brazil’s government said, “After four days of challenging work hindered by weather, terrain, and low visibility, Indonesian rescue teams recovered the body of the Brazilian tourist.” Muhammad Hariyadi, head of the local search and rescue team, told Reuters earlier that Marins had not fallen into the volcano crater but instead down a cliffside with unstable, sandy terrain, making recovery efforts extremely difficult. Around 50 rescuers were involved in the mission.
Initially located on Saturday at a depth of 150 meters, Marins had slipped further to about 500 meters by Monday, Hariyadi said. Indonesia’s Forestry Minister Raja Juli Antoni announced that the Mount Rinjani hiking trail would be closed temporarily to facilitate the evacuation and to honor Marins and her family. In recent years, several hikers, including foreigners, have died in accidents on Mount Rinjani. Just last month, a Malaysian tourist also fell to their death in the same area, local media reported.
