The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has opened applications for its Gen Z Fellowship Programme 2026, offering young graduates an opportunity to gain hands-on experience in civic administration while receiving a monthly stipend of ₹61,500. The 12-month fellowship will select 50 candidates and is aimed at bringing young professionals into Mumbai's civic governance system. The programme is expected to give fellows exposure to municipal administration, public policy, project management and other areas connected with urban governance.

According to the BMC's official notification, applicants must hold a graduate degree from a recognised institution and be below 28 years of age. Candidates are also required to have knowledge of Marathi, Hindi and English, along with basic computer and internet skills. The requirement to know Marathi is significant because fellows will work within Mumbai's civic administration and may need to communicate with municipal officials and residents in the city.

The fellowship will run for one year, during which selected participants will receive a stipend of ₹61,500 per month. However, the opportunity is a fellowship and should not be considered equivalent to a permanent BMC government job. The programme is intended to provide practical exposure to how a large civic organisation functions. Fellows could gain experience in areas such as policy implementation, administrative coordination, data analysis, project monitoring and preparation of reports, depending on their assignments.

For young graduates interested in public policy, urban development, governance, administration or civic technology, the programme could offer valuable professional experience. Working within Mumbai's municipal system may also give participants a closer understanding of the challenges involved in managing one of India's largest cities.

Applications for the BMC Gen Z Fellowship 2026 began on August 19 and will remain open until August 31, 2026. Candidates are required to apply online and pay an application fee of ₹500. Interested applicants should carefully check the official BMC notification and recruitment portal before submitting their forms, particularly for document requirements and other conditions of the fellowship.

With only 50 positions available, the programme is likely to attract competition from graduates looking to build careers in public administration and urban governance. For eligible candidates, the combination of a substantial monthly stipend and direct exposure to civic administration makes the fellowship a notable opportunity.
