After a group of Opposition‑backed women MPs raised concerns over the impartiality of Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, a fresh set of women lawmakers from the ruling BJP has penned a letter backing him, calling his conduct “fair” and expressing full “faith” in his leadership of the Lower House. In a closely watched move, eleven BJP women MPs have addressed a joint note to the Speaker, lauding his “patience and perseverance” in handling what they described as highly disruptive conduct by certain opposition members. The letter comes days after Congress‑linked women MPs wrote to Birla questioning the unusually sharp tone he used against them during a heated Budget‑session exchange, and warning that the dignity of the Lok Sabha was under threat.

The BJP‑aligned group’s letter stresses that instances such as opposition MPs allegedly advancing toward the Well of the House, approaching the Speaker’s table, and throwing paper or placards constitute a “heinous act” that should draw strict action under House rules. It urges Birla to impose the “strictest possible measures” against members held responsible, while still underlining that they see him as a fair‑minded Chair who treats all members equitably and ensures equal participation for MPs across parties.

Much of the political drama has revolved around perceptions of fairness and public optics. The Congress‑led women MPs had argued that the Speaker, under pressure from the ruling side, was being used to publicly target Opposition women in what they called “false and defamatory” language. Their appeal framed the Speaker less as a partisan actor and more as an elected officer being pulled into a high‑stakes political tussle.

By contrast, the BJP women MPs’ letter positions Parliament as fortunate to have Birla at its helm during a period of intense floor confrontations. Emphasising decorum and order, they portray the recent uproar as a breakdown caused by a “select few” Opposition members, not a systemic failure of parliamentary leadership. The message implicitly tries to insulate the Speaker from fresh criticism and close off early moves by the Opposition to challenge his conduct through motions or public campaigns.

Analysts say the prominence of women MPs on both sides of the exchange is significant. With nearly one‑in‑six Lok Sabha members now women, gender, dignity, and parliamentary decorum have become central talking points beyond just party lines. For the Opposition, the question is whether women lawmakers can speak freely without fear of being singled out or shamed. For the BJP‑allied group, the narrative is about protecting the “dignity” and decorum of the institution from what they portray as orchestrated disruption.

Beyond the immediate controversy, this round of letters feeds into a broader debate over who truly controls the narrative inside Parliament: the Speaker enforcing Rules, the parties managing their troops, or the public monitoring each outburst through social media and news clips. At a time when Lok Sabha sessions are often front‑page news, even internal communications such as notes to the Speaker are being treated as full‑blown political statements.

With both Opposition‑backed and BJP‑linked women MPs now on record, the House appears to be entering a phase where every ruling from the Chair will be scrutinised not just in legal terms, but in moral and political ones as well. For now, the stage is set for a heightened contest over exactly what “fairness,” “order,” and public trust mean when the gavel comes down in the Lok Sabha.
