Belgian PM Takes Veiled Swipe at Trump's Tariff Policy During India Visit

Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever appeared to take a veiled dig at US President Donald Trump’s tariff policies during his visit to India, using a pointed example of how frequently changing trade decisions can create uncertainty for businesses and the global economy. Speaking at the India-Belgium High-Level Dialogue on the India-European Union Free Trade Agreement in Mumbai, De Wever criticised the growing trend of protectionism and governments raising trade barriers. Without directly naming Trump, he referred to a situation where a government could announce a decision on one day, withdraw it a few days later and then bring it back again.

The remark drew laughter from the audience, with De Wever suggesting that those present understood the country and leader he was referring to. His comments were widely interpreted as a reference to Trump's approach to tariffs, which has involved repeated changes in trade measures affecting several countries.

De Wever argued that businesses need stability and predictable rules to make long-term investment and trading decisions. He warned that constantly changing tariff policies can make it difficult for companies to plan ahead and can add further pressure to international supply chains. The Belgian prime minister made the comments as India and the European Union work to strengthen their economic relationship. The India-EU free trade agreement has emerged as an important part of efforts to increase trade and investment between the two sides at a time when global commerce is facing growing geopolitical and economic uncertainty.

His visit to India also focused on expanding bilateral cooperation between New Delhi and Brussels. Discussions covered trade, investment, defence, technology and other strategic areas, reflecting the growing importance of the relationship between the two countries. Belgium is an important economic partner for India in Europe, with significant cooperation in sectors including chemicals, pharmaceuticals, logistics, technology and manufacturing. The Port of Antwerp-Bruges also plays an important role in India's commercial links with Europe.

De Wever's India visit took place from September 2 to 4 and marked his first official visit to the country since becoming Belgian prime minister in February 2025. He was accompanied by a Belgian delegation that included officials and business representatives. During his engagements in India, De Wever also spoke positively about Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership and highlighted the importance of stronger partnerships between India and European countries.

The Belgian leader's comments on tariffs come amid a broader global debate over protectionism and the future of international trade. Countries and businesses have increasingly been looking for more reliable trading relationships as tariff disputes and geopolitical tensions reshape global supply chains. Although De Wever did not mention Trump by name, his reference to decisions being made and then quickly reversed was seen as a clear criticism of unpredictable tariff policies. His remarks added a pointed moment to an India visit otherwise focused on strengthening economic and strategic ties between India and Belgium.
