Subrahmanyam Jaishankar met Mark Carney in New Delhi on Monday during the latter’s official visit to India, expressing appreciation for his commitment to advancing a forward-looking partnership between the two nations. In a post on X, Jaishankar said he was “delighted” to call on Prime Minister Carney and welcomed his focus on strengthening bilateral ties. Carney, who arrived in the capital on Sunday evening after concluding a productive visit to Mumbai, is scheduled to hold talks with Narendra Modi at Hyderabad House.

The visiting leader was received at the airport by Union Minister of State Jitin Prasada. On Sunday evening, Jaishankar also met Canada’s Foreign Minister, Anita Anand, ahead of the prime ministerial discussions. Anand thanked Jaishankar for the warm welcome and expressed her intent to deepen India-Canada cooperation.

Carney’s visit, from 27 February to 2 March, marks his first official trip to India. The two prime ministers are set to hold delegation-level talks to review progress under the India-Canada Strategic Partnership. Building on their earlier meetings in Kananaskis during the G7 Summit and in Johannesburg on the sidelines of the G20 Summit, the leaders will assess cooperation across trade and investment, energy, critical minerals, agriculture, education, research and innovation, and people-to-people ties.

They are also expected to exchange views on regional and global developments and attend the India-Canada CEOs Forum. The visit comes at a key moment in efforts to further normalise and strengthen bilateral relations, with discussions focusing on strategic and economic priorities shared by both countries.
